Thanks for the explanation about pixels and file sizes. I'd noticed that pictures with more detail have bigger file sizes and now I think I understand why! :)
I don't think my little camera does RAW but I will check. I am ok with jpg as I don't do much editing. more…

If you don't you can get a freebie like the GIMP and do a few tricks like lightening up a shot if it's come out dark. more…

I do have an editing programme that I think will do that - it says something like "lighten only dark areas".

I meant in an editing program (if you have one) you could simply select anything that's not Jazz and raise the levels a little bit.
Although if the whole pic is underexposed slightly you might be able to raise the brightness/contrast and still keep more detail in the fur. more…

I'd dial in a bit of underexposure.
If yours is still like mine (mine is one down from yours) you hold down the AV +/- button and turn the little selection wheel, if you look on your LCD the little marker on the exposure scale will go up or down.
