I'd noticed that pictures with more detail have bigger file sizes and now I think I understand why! :)
I don't think my little camera does RAW but I will check. I am ok with jpg as I don't do much editing.

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

The GIMP is good, quite easy to use, well I am learning bits!
If you don't you can get a freebie like the GIMP and do a few tricks like lightening up a shot if it's come out dark.

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

I am still trying to learn with my small dinky digital camera so any and all advice greatly received, love the pics i tried one on sat in the park it just kinda looked to dark will try and post them after work :)

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

Thanks :)

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

I saw that one I think, liked it :D

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

I'm always trying for moody... in photos too :))

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

Darn, my camera mag lied to me :))

In response to:Contre-jour Photography

Cool stuff. One of my flickr photos is a photo taken from my back door straight into the sunlight - I liked the effect so I put it up.

I think if you like how it comes out, then do it :)

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

Hope it works!

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

I do have an editing programme that I think will do that - it says something like "lighten only dark areas".

Thanks for all that info - I'm going to give that a try :)

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

I meant in an editing program (if you have one) you could simply select anything that's not Jazz and raise the levels a little bit.

Although if the whole pic is underexposed slightly you might be able to raise the brightness/contrast and still keep more detail in the fur.

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

"If you underexpose by a stop or two you'll get more detail in the cat and then select the rest of the pic and bump up the brightness a bit."

Do you mean I could get two different exposures in the one shot?

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

I'd dial in a bit of underexposure.

If yours is still like mine (mine is one down from yours) you hold down the AV +/- button and turn the little selection wheel, if you look on your LCD the little marker on the exposure scale will go up or down.

If you underexpose by a stop or two you'll get more detail in the cat and then select the rest of the pic and bump up the brightness a bit.

Alternatively if you have photo editing software you could do exposure bracketing (in the menu) to shoot three pics, one underexposed, one overexpose and one just right, then put the normal pic over the underexposed pic and gently delete the normal exposed cat.

For aperture on yours selecting AV mode on the top wheel you use the little select wheel to choose your aperture.

In response to:Aperture - f-number.f-stop

Would this be a good way of preventing photos of white cats looking over-exposed?
